  2. 2 c Unsifted Unbleached Flour

  3. 2 tb Cocoa

  4. 1 1/2 ts Baking Soda

  5. 1/2 ts Salt

  6. 1/2 c Shortening

  7. 1 1/2 c Sugar

  8. 2 large Eggs

  9. 2 ts Vanilla Extract

  10. 2 c Unsweetened Applesauce

  11. 6 oz Semisweet Chocolate Chips

  12. 1/2 c Chopped Walnuts

  1. Sift the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt together and set aside. Creamthe shortening and sugar together in a large mixing bowl until light andfluffy, using an electric mixer set on medium speed. Add the eggs, one ata time, beating well after each addition. Blend in the vanilla extract.

  2. Add the dry ingredientss alternately with the applesauce to the creamedmixture, beating well after each addition, using the mixer set on lowspeed. Pour the batter into a greased 13 X 9 X 2-inch baking pan. Sprinklewith the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts. Bake in a preheated 350degree F. oven for 35 minutes or until the cake test done. Cool in the panon a wire rack.
