  1. Cake:

  2. 2 2/3 cups unsifted cake flour

  3. 3 teaspoons baking powder

  4. 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  5. 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  6. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  7. 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

  8. 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

  9. 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

  10. 2 large eggs

  11. 1 1/4 cups milk

  12. Frosting:

  13. 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened

  14. 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened

  15. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  16. 1 (1-pound) box confectioners' sugar

  17. 1/2 to 1 tablespoon milk, optional

  18. 3/4 cup chopped walnuts

  1. Prepare Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Generously grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.

  2. In medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and cloves.

  3. In large bowl, with electric mixer on high speed, beat together sugar, butter and eggs until light and fluffy. Add flour mixture, milk and vanilla; beat 1 minute longer.

  4. Transfer mixture to prepared pans and bake until cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Transfer pans to wire rack and cool in pans 5 minutes; loosen edges and invert onto wire rack to cool completely.

  5. Meanwhile, prepare Frosting: In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla until fluffy. Beat in confectioners' sugar, adding milk as necessary to make spreadable consistency.

  6. Fill and frost cake on serving plate. Press walnuts into frosting on side and along outer edge of top of cake.
