  1. 1 cup butter , softened

  2. 1 cup brown sugar , packed

  3. 1 egg , beaten

  4. 1 teaspoon vanilla

  5. 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour

  6. 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

  7. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  8. 1 cup nuts, finely chopped

  1. Beat butter and brown sugar together until light and flutty.

  2. Add egg and vanilla and beat well.

  3. Sift flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar together.

  4. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture, beating well after each addition.

  5. Blend in nuts.

  6. Separate dough into four parts.

  7. Roll each part into a cylinder about 1 1/4" thick.

  8. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours.

  9. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  10. Remove dough from refrigerator, unwrap, and slice on a slight diagonal.

  11. Place about 1" apart on ungreased baking sheets.

  12. Bake at for 15 minutes, or until lightly browned on edges.
