2 medium onions -- minced

8 cups water

2 cups dried split peas

5 cloves

1 bay leaf

1/2 pound bacon -- cut crosswise

2 stalks celery -- chopped

2 medium carrots -- diced

1/4 teaspoon marjoram

1 tablespoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

8 to 10 hours. Before serving remove bay leaf and cloves.
