  1. 4 fresh pears

  2. 250 ml red wine

  3. 50 g brown sugar

  4. 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

  5. 1/4 teaspoon ginger

  6. 1 pinch saffron

  1. Pre-heat oven to 180C or 350°F 2 Peel the pears, but leave them whole, then put them in an oven-proof dish.

  2. Mix together the remaining ingredients and pour them over the fruit.

  3. Place in a moderate oven and bake until tender, about 20 to 30 minutes.

  4. Serve them with the wine juices and hot custard or cream.
