  1. 1 For Cake:

  2. 1 cup sugar

  3. 3/4 teaspoon salt

  4. 1/4 cup grated chocolate

  5. 3/4 cup vegetable shortening

  6. 5 eggs, yolks and whites separated

  7. 1 cup milk

  8. 2 cups flour

  9. 1 teaspoon baking powder

  10. 1/2 cup sultana raisins

  11. 1/2 cup candied chopped citron peel

  1. Instructions For cake: Cream shortening; add sugar gradually, yolks of eggs well beaten, milk, flour, salt, baking powder, grated chocolate, citron, and raisins. Mix and beat batter for two minutes, then fold in stiffly beaten whites of eggs. Turn into greased and floured tin; bake for one and a quarter hours in a moderate oven. Cool completely and cover with frosting.
