  1. DATE FILLING:

  2. 3/4 lb pitted dates , chopped

  3. 1 cup water

  4. 1/3 cup brown sugar , packed

  5. 1 tsp lemon juice

  6. CRUMB MIXTURE

  7. 1-1/2 cups rolled oats

  8. 1-1/2 cups flour

  9. 1/4 tsp salt

  10. 3/4 tsp baking soda

  11. 1 cup brown sugar , packed

  12. 3/4 cup butter , softened

  1. DATE FILLING:

  2. Add dates, water, brown sugar, and cook in pot over medium heat, stirring often, until dates are soft and mixture is thickened (about 15 minutes) YMMV - your mileage may vary Stir in lemon juice and remove from heat Let cool Optional: You can microwave date mixture, but you will be on your own for settings and how long.

  3. CRUMB MIXTURE:

  4. Combine oats, flour, salt, soda, sugar in bowl Add butter, cutting into mixture until crumbly Press 1/2 crumb mixture into bottom of 9 inch square pan Spread cooled filling evenly over the top of bottom layer Spread remaining crumble mixture over date mixture Bake in a 350F oven for 20-25 minutes or until top is nicely toasted.

  5. Let cool before cutting into squares
