  1. 1 cup butter, softened

  2. 3/4 cup sugar

  3. 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar

  4. 1 egg

  5. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  6. 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  7. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  8. 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

  9. 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  10. 1/8 teaspoon salt

  1. In a bowl, cream butter and sugars. Beat in egg and vanilla; mix well. Combine the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, nutmeg and salt; add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Shape into 3/4-in. balls; place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Flatten with a glass dipped in sugar. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks. Yield: about 6 dozen.
