  1. 1/4 cup butter , softened

  2. 2 cups self-rising flour

  3. 1 cup sugar

  4. 1/2 cup brown sugar

  5. 1/4 cup butter , melted

  6. 4 oz. almond paste , chopped

  7. 1 egg

  8. 1/3 cup slivered almonds

  9. 1 cup milk

  10. 1 cup raspberries

  11. 2 teaspoons vanilla or almond extract

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F and grease a 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.

  2. In a medium-sized bowl, beat the softened butter, sugar, egg, milk, and extract at low speed until smooth.

  3. Add the flour; beat at low speed for 4 minutes.

  4. Spread half the batter in the baking dish.

  5. Mix the melted butter, brown sugar, almond paste, almonds, and raspberries.

  6. Sprinkle half the brown sugar mixture on top of the batter.

  7. Spread the rest of the batter; top with the remaining brown sugar mixture. Bake until a knife inserted near the middle comes out clean, about 45 minutes.

  8. Yields 12 pieces **

  9. Note If you are not using self-rising flour, add 3 teaspoons baking powder and 1 teaspoon salt. **

  10. Variation Strawberries, blueberries, or cranberries may be substituted for the raspberries in this recipe. Cranberries may need additional sweetening. **
