  1. 1 loaf Hawaiian bread (Portuguese sweet bread)

  2. Vegetable oil, for frying

  3. 4 eggs

  4. 115 ml single cream

  5. 3 tsps ground cinnamon

  6. 1 tsp vanilla essence

  7. 1/2; tsp baking powder

  8. Pinch ground nutmeg

  9. 450 g plain flour

  10. 1 tbsp sugar

  11. Pinch salt

  12. Syrup, for serving

  1. Hawaiian French toast sticks 1) Cut the bread into 5-by-10-by-1 cm sticks and dry for at least 2 hours or overnight.

  2. Heat the oil in a fryer to 180 degrees C.

  3. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, single cream, 1 tsp of the cinnamon, vanilla, baking powder and nutmeg until all the ingredients are incorporated and the batter is fluffy. In another bowl, mix together the flour, remaining 2 tsps cinnamon, sugar and salt. Dip the bread into the batter and then into the flour mixture. Fry about 2 mins per side. Serve with syrup of choice.
