  1. C ombine the first 5 ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well. Add shortening and blend it in to fine crumb consistency. Stir in milk. For each pancake, pour 2 tablespoons of batter onto a lightly greased hot griddle. Cook over medium heat until bubbles form over the top. Turn to brown on other side. Yield 12 pancakes .
