  1. 2 (8-ounce) cans tomato sauce with mushrooms

  2. 11/4 teaspoons sugar

  3. 1/2 teaspoon dried whole oregano

  4. 1 1/2 pounds ground beef

  5. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  6. 1/4 teaspoon pepper

  7. 6 hamburger buns, split and toasted

  8. 6 slices process American cheese

  9. 6 slices onion

  10. 6 slices dill pickle

  1. Directions Combine tomato sauce, sugar, and oregano in a small saucepan.

  2. Reserve 1/3 cup of mixture; set aside.

  3. Cook remaining mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally, until thoroughly heated.

  4. Remove from heat, and keep warm.

  5. Combine beef, 1/3 cup reserved sauce, salt, and pepper; mix well.

  6. Shape into 6 patties about 3/4 inches thick.

  7. Place burgers on the rack of a broiler pan.

  8. Broil 5 inches from heat for 5 minutes on each side or until burgers reach desired degree of doneness.

  9. Place patties on bottom half of buns; top each with a slice of cheese, onion, and pickle.

  10. Broil until cheese melts.

  11. Spoon sauce over patties, and cover with top half of buns.
