  2. 1 kilogram potatoes -- boiled and mashed

  3. 1/4 kilogram onion -- peeled and chopped

  4. 1 teaspoon turmeric

  5. salt -- to taste

  6. **TO GRIND**

  7. 8 red chiles -- fried

  8. 1/2 teaspoon asafetida

  9. 1 small coconut -- grated

  10. 1 marble-sized ball of tamarind

  11. 1 sprig curry leaves -- cleaned

  12. **FOR SEASONING**

  13. 1 1/2 teaspoons mustard seeds

  14. 2 teaspoons black gram dal

  15. 2 red chiles -- broken

  16. 4 tablespoons coconut oil

  1. Grind together red chiles, asafetida, grated coconut, tamarind and curry leaves to a thick paste adding a little water. Heat oil and add mustard seeds, black gram dal and red chiles. When brown, add onions and turmeric. Fry until onions become golden. Add mashed potatoes, coconut paste, salt, half cup water and curry leaves. Bring to a boil and serve hot.
