  1. Selection of northwest cheese , such as Cheshire, Lancashire, Wensleydale, goat's cheese

  2. 225 g dates , finely chopped

  3. 225 g apples , peeled and chopped

  4. 225 g sultanas , and raisins, mixed

  5. 225 g onions , finely chopped

  6. 225 g dark brown sugar , preferably muscovado

  7. 300 ml malt vinegar

  8. 1 tsp salt

  9. pinch mustard powder

  10. pinchfreshly ground black pepper

  11. 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  12. pinch ground cloves

  1. Mix all the chutney ingredients together in a large bowl.

  2. Spoon into cold, sterilised jars, and fill to the brim.

  3. Seal with a tight-fitting lid and store in a cool, dry place.

  4. The chutney will keep for up to 6 weeks.
