  1. 1 cup butter or shortening

  2. 2 cups sugar

  3. 3 lg eggs - Separated whites beaten to soft peaks

  4. 3 squares bitter chocolate - melted

  5. 1 cup milk

  6. 1/2 cake compressed yeast

  7. 1/2 tsp salt

  8. 2 3/4 cups cake flour

  9. 1 tsp soda

  10. 3 Tbs hot water

  11. 1 1/2 tsp vanilla

  1. Cream butter and sugar, beat well; add egg yolks Next the melted chocolate and the milk Add the yeast which has been mixed in luke warm water.

  2. Add the flour and salt and beaten in well Add the beaten egg whites Allow to stand overnight (cover lightly with tea towel)

  3. In the morning, add the soda dissolved in 3 Tbs hot water and vanilla Bake in slow oven (350 degrees F) about 35 minutes.

  4. Makes 2 fair sized loaf or 1 extra large layer cake.
