  1. 2/3 cup butter or vegetable fat

  2. 2 cups sugar

  3. 5 eggs --

  4. 2 1/2 cups fisher's blend pastry flour

  5. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  6. 1 cup milk

  7. 1 cup chopped walnut meats

  8. 4 squares ghirardelli's unsweetened cake -- , melted chocolate *OR*

  9. 1 cup ghirardelli's ground chocolate sifted with -- flour

  10. 2 teaspoons vanilla

  1. Preparation : Cream butter, add sugar and well beaten egg yolks. Sift together pastry flour, baking powder and salt. Add these alternately with milk. Stir in nuts, chocolate and vanilla. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in three well greased 9-inch layer cake tins, in a moderate oven (about 360 F.) (Yes, it says 360 F, not 350 F) 25 minutes. Spread with a boiled white or mocha frosting.
