  1. 285 gms plain flour (maida)

  2. 85 gms plus

  3. 1 teaspoon powdered sugar

  4. 170 gms margarine or butter

  5. 2 tsp levelled, cocoa powder

  6. 1/2 tsp vanilla essence

  7. a pinch of salt

  1. Sieve the flour, salt and sugar together.

  2. Apply the margarine to the flour very well. Knead lightly until it forms a smooth dough.

  3. Divide the dough into two equal parts.

  4. In one part, add the vanilla essence and mix well.

  5. Divide each piece of dough again into two.

  6. Form each piece of dough again into two.

  7. Place a vanilla roll next to the chocolate roll so that they are side by side. On top of these rolls, place the second set of rolls so that a vanilla roll is on top of the chocolate one and vice versa.

  8. Press all the rolls lightly togehter so that the entire dough is joined.

  9. Cut into thin slices, arrange on a greased baking tin and bake ina preheated moderate oven at 350°F for 20 minutes.

  10. Cool and store.
