  1. 3 2 1/2 cups okra

  2. 1 onion

  3. 1 carrot

  4. 1 turnip

  5. 3 tomatoes, skinned

  6. 1 cup beans

  7. 1 can peas

  8. 2 stalks celery

  9. 3 tablespoons parsley, chopped

  10. 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening

  11. 5 cups water Salt, pepper, and red pepper

  1. Instructions Cut fresh vegetables into pieces. Melt vegetable shortening in a saucepan. Add onion, carrot, turnip, beans, and cook 15 minutes. Add okra, celery, and water. Cook slowly for 1 1/2 hours, add seasoning of salt, pepper and red pepper, tomatoes, corn, and peas. Simmer for 40 minutes. If too thick, thin with stock. Serve hot. .
