  7. 1 c Butter

  8. 1 c Caster sugar

  9. 1 t Vanilla essence

  10. 3 Eggs

  11. 5 c Plain flour

  12. 3 ts Baking powder

  13. 1/2 ts Ground cinnamon

  14. 1/4 ts Ground cloves

  15. 1/4 c Milk

  16. 1/2 c Toasted sesame seeds

  17. 70 Cooking time:

  18. 15-20 minutes Oven

  19. temperature: 190 C (375 F)

  20. Cream butter and sugar with vanilla essence until

  21. light and fluffy. Beat eggs, reserve 1 tablespoon for glazing and add remainder gradually to butter mixture,

  22. beating well.

  23. Sift dry ingredients twice. Stir into creamed mixture

  24. alternately with milk to form a soft dough. Knead

  25. lightly until smooth. If dough is sticky, chill for 1

  26. hour.

  27. Scatter some sesame seeds lightly on one side of

  28. pastry board. Shape pieces of dough into thick pencil

  29. shapes and roll onto the sesame seeds to coat lightly

  30. or according to taste. Double over rolled dough and twist, or form into rings, figure eights or coils.

  31. Place on greased baking sheets and glaze with reserved

  32. egg beaten with a little milk. Bake in a moderate

  33. oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a

  34. wire rack and store in an airtight container.

  35. Variation: Roll dough in granulated sugar instead of

  36. seeds. Glaze lightly with milk.
