  2. 2 cups steamed rice

  3. 1 cup zwieback crumbs

  4. 3/4 cup milk

  5. 4 tablespoons chopped onion

  6. Scant 1/2 teaspoon sage or sweet marjoram

  7. 1 tablespoon vegetable butter

  8. Salt

  9. 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

  1. Put onion, savory, and butter into a small pan, and let simmer over the fire, the same as for lentil patties.

  2. Add the milk and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

  3. Bring to a boil and pour over the crumbs.

  4. Let stand 10 minutes; then add the chopped nuts, and mix in the steamed rice, using a silver fork, so as to mix lightly.

  5. Form into small patties, and brown; or it may be baked in the form of a loaf, if desired.

  6. If used for a filling for stuffed peppers, add an additional 1/2 tablespoon vegetable butter and 1/2 cup diced bell pepper when braising the onion at the beginning; then ad 1 large ripe tomato cut small, or 1/3 cup stewed tomato, cook, and mix with the rice.
