  1. 1 cup butter

  2. 3 cups sugar

  4. 1 ounce red food coloring

  5. 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, unsweetened

  6. 3 cups flour

  7. 1 cup buttermilk

  8. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  9. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  10. 1 teaspoon baking soda

  11. 1 tablespoon white vinegar

  1. Instructions Allow butter to come to room temperature. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Using a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar. Add one egg and beat well. Repeat until all eggs are incorporated. Combine cocoa and food coloring and add to sugar mixture. Add 1 cup of flour followed by 1/3 cup buttermilk. Repeat until both are fully added. Gently mix the baking soda and vinegar. Stir slowly into the mixture. Pour the batter into three greased and floured 8-inch pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow it to cool while making the frosting.
