  1. 2 pounds lean ground beef

  2. 3/4 cup chopped onion

  3. 2 cloves garlic, -- crushed

  4. 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar

  5. 1 teaspoon salt, -- or to taste

  6. 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  7. 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel

  8. 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper

  9. 1 teaspoon thyme

  10. 1/2 teaspoon basil

  11. 1 15 oz can tomato sauce

  12. 2 6 oz cans tomato paste

  13. 1 6 oz can sliced mushrooms, -- undrained

  14. 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

  1. Preparation : Place meat, onion, green pepper and garlic into a large heated saucepan. Cook until meat loses its pink color. Remove mixture with a slotted spoon and put into a crockpot. Add brown sugar, seasonings, tomato sauce and tomato paste; mix well. Cover and cook on low 8 to 10 hours. Stir in mushrooms, lemon peel and lemon juice; heat thoroughly. Spoon sauce over hot spaghetti and accompany with grated Parmesan cheese.
