  1. Barbecued Tempeh

  2. 1 pound tempeh, cubed

  3. 3 tablespoons vegetable oil

  4. 1 cup finely chopped onions

  5. 2 large garlic cloves, minced

  6. 1 teaspoon ground fennel seeds

  7. 1 teaspoon chili powder

  8. 1 teaspoon ground coriander

  9. 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  10. 1/8 teaspoon cayenne

  11. 1 green or red bell pepper, chopped

  12. 2 tablespoons tamari soy sauce

  13. 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

  14. 3 tablespoons molasses or brown sugar

  15. 2 tablespoons cider vinegar

  16. 1 tablespoon prepared mustard

  17. 6 tablespoons tomato paste (7-ounce can)

  18. 1 cup water

  19. 4 to 5 dashes Tabasco or other hot red pepper sauce

  20. Saute the onions, garlic, and spices until the onions begin to

  21. soften. Add the peppers and tempeh and continue sauteing until the

  22. peppers brighten and the tempeh browns. Transfer this mixture to

  23. a shallow baking pan. Whisk together the sauce ingredients and pour

  24. them over the vegetable-tempeh mixture. Bake covered at 350 F for half an hour and uncovered for another half an hour, stirring

  25. frequently throughout.
