  1. 2 cups water

  2. 1 cup chopped dried peaches

  3. 1 cup chopped dried apples

  4. 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  5. 1 tablespoon butter

  6. 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  7. 1/8 teaspoon salt

  8. 2 cups all-purpose flour

  9. 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  10. 1 teaspoon salt

  11. 1/3 cup vegetable shortening

  12. 1/2 cup milk

  13. 2 cups vegetable oil

  1. Combine water, peaches and apples in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, or until tender and thickened. Stir in sugar, butter, nutmeg and salt; set aside.

  2. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle milk over flour mixture; stir until mixture forms a ball.

  3. Divide into 7 balls; roll each out on wax paper, one at at time, into a circle about 1/4-inch thick. Cut into 6-inch circles. Divide fruit mixture among circles, about 2 tablespoons each. Moisten edges and fold in half, pressing edges together with a fork to seal.

  4. Heat oil to 375°F (190°C) in a large heavy skillet. Cook pies until golden brown on both sides, turning once. Drain well on paper towels. Serve hot. Refrigerate any leftovers.
