  8. 1 pound navy beans -- dried w/ water to cover

  9. 6 cups water

  10. 1 teaspoon salt

  11. 4 slices bacon -- crisp, chopped

  12. 1 medium onion -- chopped

  13. 2 medium bell pepper -- chopped

  14. 1 cup barbecue sauce

  15. 1 cup apple cider

  16. 1/3 cup dark molasses -- unsulphured

  17. 1/4 cup mustard

  18. 2 tablespoons cider vinegar

  19. 1 cup burnt ends -- shredded

  20. Soak beans for at least 4 hours in water to cover, then drain.

  21. 6 cups water. Bring beans to boil over high heat, and then reduce to a simmer. Cook slowly, stirring up from the bottom occasionally, for 2 to 3 hours. Stir in the salt after the beans have softened. Add more water if the beans begin to seem dry. THe beans are ready when they mash easily but still hold their shape.

  22. Preheat oven to 325F.

  23. In a skillet fry bacon until crisp. Remove the bacon and drain. Add onion and pepper to the rendered bacon drippings and saute until soft.

  25. 15 - 30 minutes
