  1. 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

  2. 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar

  3. 1 cup butter, softened

  4. 1 cup vegetable shortening

  5. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  6. 1 teaspoon water

  7. 4 large eggs

  8. 5 cups all-purpose flour

  9. 2 teaspoons baking soda

  10. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  11. 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

  12. 2 cups chopped nuts, optional

  1. Preheat oven to 350 °F (175°C). In a bowl cream together sugar, brown sugar, butter, shortening, vanilla and water with an electric mixer on medium speed. Beat in eggs. Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Gradually add to sugar mixture. Fold in chocolate chips and nuts. Drop batter by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake until golden brown, 9 to 11 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
