  1. 1 tsp. vegetable oil

  2. 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped

  3. 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced

  4. 1 fresh jalapeno pepper, stemmed, seeded and finely chopped

  5. 2 tsp. ground cumin

  6. 1 cup canned cooked black beans, drained and rinsed

  7. 340 g lean ground beef

  8. 2 tbsp. tomato paste

  9. 2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro leaves

  10. 1 tsp. dried thyme

  11. 1/2 tsp. salt

  12. 1/2 tsp. pepper

  13. 4 hamburger buns or rolls, split and toasted

  1. Prepare grill. Heat oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring, about 3 minutes until light golden colored. Add garlic, jalapeno and cumin and cook, stirring, 2 minutes(if mixture becomes too dry add 1 tbsp. water). Transfer the vegetable mixture to a medium bowl. Add black beans and mash coarsely. Add ground beef, tomato paste, cilantro, thyme, salt and pepper and mix until well blended. Shape the beef mixture into four 1/4 inch thick patties. Place the beef patties on an oiled grill rack. Grill about 5 minutes per side until burgers are browned and cooked through. Place burgers on toasted buns and serve.
