  1. 8 ounces smoked sausage or linguica, diced

  2. 4 ounces ground beef round

  3. 1 cup chopped onion

  4. 2 teaspoons chopped garlic

  5. 2 (15-ounce) cans kidney or navy beans, rinsed, drained

  6. 1 cup tomato sauce

  7. 1 cup chicken broth

  8. 1/2 cup dry white wine or chicken broth

  9. 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar

  10. 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin

  11. 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves

  12. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  13. 1 teaspoon pepper

  14. 2/3 cup fresh white bread crumbs

  1. Sauté sausage, ground beef, onion and garlic in large skillet until meat is browned and onion is tender, about 10 minutes. Drain well. Combine meat mixture and remaining ingredients, except bread crumbs, in 2 1/2-quart casserole. Bake at 350º (175ºC), uncovered for 1 hour. Sprinkle top of casserole with bread crumbs and bake until crumbs are lightly browned, 20 to 25 minutes.
