  1. 1/2 pounds bratwurst (about 5 or 6 links)

  2. 1 bottle (12 ounces) amber ale

  3. 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  4. 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar

  5. 2 tablespoons red wine or cider vinegar

  6. Spicy brown mustard

  7. Cocktail rye bread

  1. Combine bratwurst, ale, onion, brown sugar and vinegar in slow cooker. Cover; cook on LOW 4 to 5 hours.

  2. Remove bratwurst and onion slices from juices in slow cooker. Cut bratwurst into 1/2-inch-thick slices. For mini open-faced sandwiches, spread mustard on cocktail rye bread. Top with bratwurst slices and cooked onion, if desired.
