  1. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  2. 1/2 pound lean ground beef

  3. 1/4 cup chopped green pepper

  4. 1/2 cup chopped onions

  5. 1/2 cup chopped celery

  6. 1 can (8oz) tomato sauce

  7. 1/2 cup water

  8. 1 large clove garlic, minced

  9. 2 tablespoons vinegar

  10. 1 tablespoon dry mustard

  11. 1/2 teaspoon thyme

  12. 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  13. salt & pepper to taste

  14. 1 large can (approximately 28 ounces) pork and beans

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat; sauté ground beef, onions, green bell pepper, and celery until beef is browned and vegetables are tender. Add tomato sauce, water, garlic, vinegar, mustard, thyme, and brown sugar. Blend well; simmer for 5 minutes. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.

  2. Pour canned pork and beans into a 2-quart casserole; gently stir in meat mixture. Bake at 375° for about 30 minutes. Barbecued beans serves 4 to 6.
