  1. 1 cup 160g / 5.6oz Rice

  2. 1/3 cup 78ml Urad dal

  3. 1/3 cup 78ml Chana dal

  4. 1/3 cup 78ml Yellow split peas

  5. 1 teaspoon 5ml Salt

  6. 1 teaspoon 5ml Red chile powder

  7. 1 teaspoon 5ml Onion - (opt) (large)

  8. 1 Carrot - (opt)

  9. 1/4 cup 23g / 0.8oz Coconut - grated (opt)

  1. Mix rice, chana dal, urad dal, and yellow split peas in a large vessel. Soak in a lot of water for about 2 hours.

  2. Grind the soaked mixture with chile powder and salt coarsely, without adding much water.

  3. Ferment for about 3 - 4 hours, then refrigerate or freeze. In cold weather, the fermenting process might take longer, and it might be a good idea to ferment in an oven (the pilot light will keep the mixture warm).

  4. Add either onions (finely cut), carrot (grated) or coconut before preparing.
