  1. 1 Onion - chopped

  2. 2 tablespoons 30ml Oil

  3. 1/2 teaspoon 2 1/2ml Ginger - grated

  4. 1/2 teaspoon 2 1/2ml Garlic - minced

  5. 2 teaspoons 10ml Salt

  6. 6 Peppercorns - crushed

  7. 1 teaspoon 5ml Turmeric

  8. 2 teaspoons 10ml Coriander

  9. 2 teaspoons 10ml Cumin

  10. 2 Chili peppers - crushed

  11. 1/2 teaspoon 2 1/2ml Chili powder

  12. 4 Whole cloves

  13. 1 Cinnamon

  14. 2 Cardamom pods

  15. 1 cup 237ml Green split peas - dried

  16. 2 Tomatoes - diced

  17. 5 cups 1185ml Stock

  18. 1 teaspoon 5ml Garam masala

  19. 2 Shallots - chopped, optional

  1. In a large soup pot, fry the onions in the oil until light brown.

  2. Stir in the spices & toss in the peas & tomatoes. Stir again & cook for 5 minutes over moderate heat. Add stock, bring to a boil, cover & simmer until the peas are tender (at least an hour).

  3. Before serving, stir in the garam masala & fish out the cinnamon stick & cloves. Garnish with shallots.
