  1. 1 cup butter, softened

  2. 1 cup vegetable shortening

  3. 1 1/2 cups sugar

  4. 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar

  5. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  6. 4 large eggs

  7. 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  8. 2 teaspoons baking soda

  9. 2 (12-ounce) packages or 4 cups semisweet chocolate chips

  10. 2 cups chopped nuts, optional

  1. Preheat oven to 350 °F (175°C). In a bowl cream together butter, shortening, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla with an electric mixer on medium speed. Stir in eggs; beat until thoroughly combined. Add flour and baking soda; mix well. Fold in chocolate chips and nuts. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly on baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack.
