  5. 2 c Packed brown sugar

  6. 1 c Butter

  7. 1/4 c Water

  8. 1 tb Vanilla extract

  9. 1/2 ts Baking soda

  10. 12 oz Chocolate chips

  11. 1 1/2 c Sliced toasted almonds

  12. Coarsely chopped Lightly grease a 10 x 15-inch baking sheet. Set aside.

  13. In a large heavy saucepan, combine the brown sugar,

  14. butter, and water and bring slowly to the boil, stirring

  15. occasionally to prevent burning. Insert a candy thermometer

  16. and cook until the mixture reaches 285 degrees F.

  17. (soft-crack stage). Remove from the heat and quickly stir

  18. in the vanilla and baking soda. Immediately pour onto the

  19. greased baking sheet. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the

  20. hot toffee. Let sit for 5 minutes, then spread evenly over

  21. the surface of the toffee with a spatula. Sprinkle the nuts

  22. evenly over the top. Cool completely. Break the hardened

  23. toffee into pieces and store in an airtight container.

  24. Makes about 1 1/2 pounds
