  1. 4 bacon strips, diced

  2. 1 large onion, chopped

  3. 1-1/3 cups water

  4. 1/3 cup dried lentils, rinsed

  5. 2 tablespoons ketchup

  6. 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  7. 3/4 teaspoon chili powder

  8. 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

  9. 1/4 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes

  10. 1 bay leaf

  11. 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained

  12. 1 can (15 ounces) pinto beans, drained

  13. 1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, drained

  1. Lightly fry bacon in a heavy 3-qt. saucepan. Add onion; cook until transparent. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cook over medium heat for 45 minutes or until lentils are tender, stirring once or twice. Remove bay leaf before serving. Yield: 8-10 servings.
