  1. Starlight Sugar Crisps

  2. 1 pkg. active dry yeast

  3. 1/4 cup warm water

  4. 3 1/2 cup all purpose flour

  5. 1 1/2 tsp. salt

  6. 1/2 cup butter or margarine

  7. 1/2 cup shortening (not oil)

  8. 2 eggs, beaten

  9. 1/2 cup sour cream

  10. 1 tsp. vanilla

  11. 1 1/2 cup sugar

  12. 2 tsp. vanilla

  13. 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. almond flavoring

  14. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a small bowl; set aside to proof.

  15. In a large bowl combine flour and salt. Cut butter and shortening

  16. into flour mixture until particles are the size of small peas. Add

  17. the beaten eggs, sour cream, vanilla and yeast; mix well. Cover and chill for two hours. Combine flavored sugar ingredients together.

  18. When ready to shape, preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Sprinkle about 1/2 cup flavored sugar on your work surface. Divide dough in half,

  19. putting 1/2 back into refrigerator. Roll dough half out into a

  20. 16 by 8 inches. Sprinkle with

  21. 1 Tbsp. flavored

  22. sugar. Fold dough to make three layers, sprinkling with sugar after

  23. 16 x 8 inches. Cut into strips - 4 x 1" each. Twist each strip two or three times and place

  24. about an inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets (if they don't want

  25. 15 - 20 minutes

  26. until light golden brown. Repeat with remaining half of dough.

  27. Note - if you store these in plastic bags, the sugar "melts" and gets all sticky.
