  1. 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened

  2. 1/2 cup applesauce

  3. 2 eggs

  4. 1 tablespoon grated orange peel

  5. 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  6. 1 teaspoon baking powder

  7. 1 teaspoon baking soda

  8. 1/4 teaspoon salt

  9. 1 cup buttermilk

  10. 1 cup chopped dates

  11. 1 cup chopped nuts GLAZE:

  12. 1 cup sugar

  13. 1/2 cup orange juice

  1. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add applesauce, eggs and orange peel; mix well. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk; mix well. Fold in dates and nuts. Pour into a greased 9-in. springform pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Meanwhile, combine glaze ingredients in a saucepan; bring to a boil. Pour over cake. Cool completely in pan. ');
