  1. 1 cup 237ml Chana dal

  2. 4 cups 948ml Water

  3. 2 teaspoons 10ml Salt

  4. 4 tablespoons 60ml Ghee

  5. 2 tablespoons 30ml Potatoes - peeled and chopped (large)

  6. 1/4 teaspoon 1 1/3ml Cayenne pepper

  7. 1/4 teaspoon 1 1/3ml Turmeric

  8. 2 teaspoons 10ml Ripe tomatoes - (or one can stewed) (large) peeled and chopped

  9. 2 teaspoons 10ml Garam masala - (or curry powder)

  10. 1 teaspoon 5ml Cumin powder

  1. Boil together the chana dal,and water.. Simmer slowly for 40 minutes until dal is tender. In a separate frying pan, heat the ghee, cayenne, cumin, the rest of the salt, garam masala and turmeric. Heat the spices in the ghee for a few minutes and add the potatoes. Stir until the potatoes are coated, then add the tomatoes. Cook until boiling.

  2. Pour the potato mixture into the dal mixture.

  3. Cook all together until the potatoes are tender. If too thick, add more water. Serve with rice or chapattis
