  1. 300 Chana dal

  2. 1/4 teaspoon 1 1/3ml Mustard seeds

  3. 1/4 teaspoon 1 1/3ml Fenugreek seeds

  4. 1/4 teaspoon 1 1/3ml Onion seeds

  5. 1/4 teaspoon 1 1/3ml Aniseeds

  6. 5 Red chillies

  7. 2 Bay leaves

  8. 1 teaspoon 5ml Turmeric powder

  9. 1 teaspoon 5ml Sugar

  10. 1/2 cup 46g / 1.6oz Fresh coconut -

  11. (sliced into 2 cm long pieces)

  12. 2 tablespoons 30ml Raisins

  13. Oil

  14. Salt - to taste

  1. Soak the dal for 4 hours in water. Pressure cook till soft. Add turmeric, salt and sugar. Keep aside. Heat oil. Add mustard seeds, fenugreek, aniseeds, broken red chillies, onion seeds, bay leaves, coconut chips and raisins. Fry gently till golden. Pour the cooked dal into the fried masala. Add enough water to cook and make into a thick gravy. Simmer and serve with 'loochies' or 'puris'.
