  1. 2 pounds lean ground beef

  2. 1 large onion, chopped

  3. 2 teaspoons garlic, finely chopped

  4. 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste

  5. 2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained

  6. 1 (14-ounce) can ready-diced tomatoes with juice

  7. 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce

  8. 2 tablespoons mild chili powder

  9. 1 (4-ounce) can chopped mild green chiles

  10. 1 teaspoon ground cumin Optional Topping Ingredients: Sour cream Shredded cheddar cheese Chopped fresh cilantro

  1. In large saucepan, brown ground beef over medium high heat until done; drain excess fat. Stir in onions and garlic and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and lightly browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Add beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, chilies and cumin, bring to a boil and continue cooking for 20 to 30 minutes for flavors to blend. Ladle hot chili into individual serving bowls and top with desired toppings.
