  2. 1/2 cup pearl barley

  3. 1 cup strained tomatoes or 1/3 cup condensed tomatoes

  4. 1 quart water

  5. 2 teaspoons salt

  6. 2 tablespoons Japanese Soy sauce

  7. 2 tablespoons butter

  8. 1 tablespoon flour

  9. 1 tablespoon sugar

  10. 1 bay leaf

  11. 1/2 teaspoon celery salt

  1. Cook the barley in the boiling, salted water together with the strained tomato and bay leaf until tender, keeping covered while cooking.

  2. Add the celery salt, sugar, and soy.

  3. Blend the flour and butter.

  4. Pour a little of the hot soup into them, stirring.

  5. Turn back into the remainder of the ingredients and cook five minutes.
