  1. 1/2 cup shortening

  2. 1/2 cup sugar

  3. 2/3 cup molasses

  4. 1 egg

  5. 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour

  6. 1 teaspoon baking soda

  7. 1 teaspoon ground ginger

  8. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  9. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  10. Dash ground cloves

  11. 3/4 cup water

  12. Whipped topping

  1. Great-Grandma's Ginger Cake Recipe photo by Taste of Home In a small bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg; mix well. Combine the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, salt and cloves. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with water, beating well after each addition.

  2. Pour into a greased 9-in. square baking pan. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Garnish with whipped topping. Yield: 9 servings.
