  1. 1 can(s) (21 oz) apple pie filling or topping

  2. 1 loaf(s) (about 1 lb) challah bread , cut in sixteen 1/2-in.-thick slices 2 box(es) (23/4 or 3 oz each) cook & serve vanilla pudding and pie filling

  3. 1 qt (4 cups) whole milk

  4. 2 tablespoon(s) lemon zest

  5. 3/4 cup(s) Goldens and Cherries (mix of golden raisins and dried cherries from a 6-oz pouch)

  6. or 3/4 cup golden raisins

  7. Garnish: confectioners' sugar

  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Have a 13 x 9-in. or 3-qt shallow baking dish ready.

  2. Spread apple pie filling in baking dish. Layer bread in a single layer on top, overlapping slices shingle-fashion. Whisk pudding mix and milk in a large bowl 2 minutes. Stir in lemon zest and Goldens and Cherries. Pour over bread, pressing bread down so it's completely saturated.

  3. Bake 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean.

  4. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature.

  5. Good with: Vanilla-Rum Sauce (recipe follows)

  6. Vanilla-Rum Sauce Stir 1 Tbsp rum and 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg into 1 cup melted vanilla ice cream. Makes 1 cup.
