  5. For cookies:

  6. 1/3 c Butter

  7. 1/3 c Shortening

  8. 3/4 c Granulated sugar

  9. 1 Egg

  10. 1 tb Milk

  11. 2 c All-purpose flour

  12. 1 1/2 ts Baking powder

  13. 1/2 ts Salt

  14. For frosting to spread:

  15. 2 tb Water

  16. For frosting to pipe:

  17. 1 1/2 c Powdered sugar

  18. 1 ts Vanilla

  19. 1 tb Water

  20. 1 tb Butter; softened

  21. Liquid or paste food

  22. -coloring

  23. Recipe by: St. Louis Post-Dispatch 12/2/96 To make cookies: Beat butter,

  24. shortening and sugar until light. Beat in egg, milk and vanilla. Sift

  25. together flour, baking powder and salt. Beat dry ingredients into moist a

  26. little at a time. Chill for 3 hours.

  27. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  28. Using a little dough at a time, roll out to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with

  29. 8 to 10 minutes on lightly greased cookie sheets.

  30. Let cool.

  31. To make frosting to spread: Mix sugar with vanilla, water and your choice

  32. of food colorings. For intense color, use paste coloring. Frost cooled

  33. cookies.

  34. To make frosting to pipe: Mix sugar with vanilla, water and butter. Color as desired. Pipe onto cookies for accent colors.

  35. Yield: About 3 dozen, depending on cutter size. By Tina Danze. --
