  1. Molasses Sugar Cookies

  2. 3/4 cup vegetable shortening (no substitutions)

  3. 2 cups flour

  4. 1 cup sugar

  5. 1/4 cup molasses

  6. 1 egg

  7. 2 teaspoons baking soda

  8. 1/2 teaspoon powdered cloves

  9. 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger

  10. 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  11. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  12. Melt shortening in a 3 or 4 quart saucepan over low heat and let

  13. cool. Add sugar, molasses, and egg, and beat well. Sift together

  14. flour soda, spices, and salt. Add to shortening mixture. Mix well

  15. and chill in refrigerator, covered with clear plastic wrap. When

  16. firm, form into 1 inch balls, roll in granulated sugar, and place

  17. 2 inches apart. Bake at

  18. 375 degrees

  19. 8-10 minutes. Cool for 1-2 minutes and remove to cooling rack.

  20. Cookies will be soft, firm as they cool.
