  2. 2 cups all-purpose flour

  3. 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder

  4. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  5. 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening

  6. 3/4 cup milk

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; stir well. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle milk evenly over flour mixture, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface; knead lightly 10 to 12 times.

  2. Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness; cut with a 2 3/4 inch biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 450 F for 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
