  8. 1 teaspoon baking powder -- rounded

  9. 1/2 teaspoon salt

  10. 2 teaspoons sugar

  11. 1 tablespoon shortening

  12. 1/4 cup water

  13. frying oil

  14. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Rub in fat. Add dry ingredients to

  15. make a soft dough.

  16. Knead lightly, with floured hands, if needed. Break off pieces and roll

  17. into balls. Flatten to 1/2 in thick. Fry in hot oil or bake onna hot

  18. greased tawa.
