  1. 1/2 cup lentils

  2. 1 tbsp oil

  3. 1 tsp mustard seeds

  4. 5 red chilies, whole

  5. 10 curry leaves

  6. 1g Asafoetida

  7. 2 tbsp garlic, crushed

  8. A pinch turmeric powder

  9. 2-3 tomatoes, quartered

  10. 3-4 peppercorns

  11. 1 green chili, deseeded and slit

  12. 1/2 cup tamarind pulp

  1. Heat oil in a pan. Sauté mustard seeds till they crackle. Add whole red chilies, curry leaves, asafetida and garlic, stir for a few seconds. Add turmeric, lentils, tomatoes, peppercorns, green chili, tamarind pulp and salt to taste. Stir in 1 liter of water.

  2. Bring to a boil and let it simmer until the lentils are mashed.

  3. Serve hot as a starter or as an accompaniment to a meal.
