  1. For the Cookies:

  2. Cream together the butter and sugar in a large bowl. Beat in the eggs. Beat in the sour cream and vanilla. Stir together the flour, baking powder and baking soda in a separate bowl. Beat the flour into the sour cream mixture and mix well. Cover and refrigerate the dough at least 2 hours.

  3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease several sheet pans. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out cookies with a floured 3 inch star shaped cookie cutter. Transfer the cookies to the prepared pans, spacing 1 inch apart. Bake about 10 to 12 minutes until the cookie springs back when pressed. Transfer the cookies to racks and cool completely.

  4. For the Frosting:

  5. Combine the butter or margarine, powdered sugar, milk, vanilla and salt in a large bowl and beat until smooth. Tint the frosting blue or red if desired. Frost the cooled cookies. Spoon the sprinkles over the frosting and press lightly to adhere. Store the cookies in an airtight container.
