  1. 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened

  2. 3/4 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed

  3. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  4. 1 large egg

  5. 2 cups all-purpose flour

  6. 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  7. 1/4 teaspoon salt

  8. Directions:

  9. In large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed, beat butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy; beat egg in well. In small bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt; with mixer at low speed beat into butter mixture to blend well. Flatten dough to disk shape; refrigerate, wrapped in plastic, 30 minutes. Work with one fourth dough at a time; keep remainder refrigerated.

  10. 350 degrees F. Roll dough out to

  11. 1/4 inch thickness on lightly floured surface and cut in desired shapes; or, mold into shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheets, spacing about 1 inch apart; bake

  12. 8 to 15 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool completely on wire racks.
